What is autism and its symptoms?

Autism is a kind of disorder in the process of brain’s neural growth, which affects the social interaction ability of children. Autistic children have a problem with social communication and will be having a repetitive behaviour for doing a same for a long period in daily basis. Symptoms are easily identified in children below three years by their parents due to the abnormal behaviours like repetitive behaviour and the lack in communication skill. Autistic toddlers behave more strangely with the social standards; react aggressively to be more of tantrums and adults are inferior to the toddlers.

Autistic children feel lonelier and tough in making friendship because of their poor social communication skill.

But they are not intended to be alone and they want to be friendly and enjoy with everyone.

These children will have an intellectual disability but some of them may be normal, may be with sleep deprivation, anxiety, intestinal problems and hyperactive. Some of them may be even with very high “I.Q.” and that may also lead to some problems like getting admission in normal schools and leading a normal life without parent’s guidance.

Children with autism may have problem with talking and hearing is a reason for communication problems. They may have strange behaviours like walking with toe, poor muscle tone and inability to perform the learned movements. These children will follow a certain rules with their repetitive behaviour with the unchanging pattern of routine activities and have interest with limited events. Some of them may also involve in injuring themselves, continuous babbling and some may also have severe injuries due to this behaviour.

People with autism may not be able to initiate a conversation; they may have a lack of imagination, creativity and focus. In the early ages, they may not respond to calling them by their names, may have a poor eye contact, lack of social skills and responsiveness.

Causes for Autism

There are a lot of causes for autism but none of them can be the exact reason for autism in every autistic child. A general study about autism says that it may be genetically transferred from parents to the children and also identified a set of genes related to this disorder. Children with autism are with irregular development and abnormal levels of neurotransmitters in brain. If the first child is with autism then the second child have a chance to be with autism and the chances are up to 5% and in case of twins it’s up to 90%. Inheritance of rare gene mutations has effects on autistic children. In some children pesticides and stress during pregnancy may be a reason for autism. Using alcohols, drugs and smoking during pregnancy may also cause autism in children.

Statistics about Autism

According to the statistics of CDC, in 2012 autism is seen in 1 in 88 children across the world, previously it was 1 in 110.

In South Korea autism prevalence rate is 1 in 38. And 1 in 6 children of U.S. has the developmental disability in 2006 – 2008 and the risk factors are in case of identical twins it will be about 36 – 95% and in non-identical twins it will be about 0 – 31%. And a sibling may have a chance of 2 – 18% and may have a down syndrome.

Autism is 5 times more common in boys (1 in 54) than in girls (1 in 254).

As per CDC, Children born to older parents are at risk, a premature or low birth weight baby also risks of autism. Diagnosis of autism at the age of 2 is reliable and valid.
